Hello everyone. Hope you all had a great week. This week, there has been some interesting stuff going on in the search industry and on the social web. Yahoo has launched Yahoo Axis, their new search engine/browser, which as they say is aimed to redefine what it means to search and browse the web. Pretty bold statement but at first glance, they just might be up to something. I installed the “desktop” addon on my FireFox browser and started to play a bit with the interface. Let’s see how it goes. Have you tried Axis yet? How about DuckDuckGo? Looks like they are attracting more users…
Another interesting stuff that happened this week is the launch of Microsoft’s new social network Socl, pronounced “social”. As with Axis, I also jumped in to see what it has to offer, and first impressions reminds me of certain features (named differently), available on another network. At first, it may look complicated, but once you get the hand of using Socl’s interface, it is actually not that difficult to use. Danny Sullivan wrote a great coverage about Socl, so if you are interested, read what he has to say. Will Microsoft be a major player in the social arena? Remains to be seen. Too early to make any judgements.
On another forefront, I really wanted to skip the whole hulabahlooh related to FaceBook’s IPO. Share price has dropped roughly 17.5% from its original IPO offer price. Scary, if you ask me, and still not sure where all this will end. We’ll see.
Finally, this week’s WhiteBoard Friday of Rand from SEOMoz, is really worth watching. In case you missed it, he explains in detail, why you should not worry about certain “SEO advices” popping up here and there, due to the latest updates from Google. All in all, just apply the most ethical search engine optimization practices, and you should be fine.

What should I do if my competitors are using webspam techniques?
White hat search marketers read and follow Google Quality Guidelines. What should they tell clients whose competitors use black hat techniques and whom continue to rank as a result of those techniques?
That’s it! Enjoy and have a great weekend.

Nice post, Francisco….
I did hear about the launch of Yahoo’s new browser, and it sounds interesting enough…
I also heard about some more abstract browsers that are getting some good vibes…
As far as the state of FaceBook (getting off on the wrong foot) I had heard some small rumblings alluding to this, happening…
Though, much talk was stating that FaceBook would start well, then hit some big humps a little further on…
So for FaceBook to have such a rocky start, is a bit of a surprise(For me, anyway)….
The Matt Cutts “Report spam” initiative could backfire, is what many people are saying…
Many sites believe that their competitors could dump some nasty spam links on their sites, then report their sites to Google and have them dumped in the rankings….
Though, as far as I know Google is said to already have had a ” Spam Report” option available for quite some time…..
I will come and watch Rand’s video a little later as I am a little busy now…
doing some offline duties…..
Hi Daniel. I think you maybe right on the “spam” issue thing and I did read somewhere that “some” are using these options deliberately to hurt competition. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what will happen next. Google did confirm that Penguin 1.1 was released last Friday, and for now, I have not seen that much of a difference. Then again, I can only monitor so many xxx keywords ๐

Hi Francisco,
you know my opinion about FB’s IPO – nothing changed since last week ๐
And about Google Quality Guidelines – Matt is telling it, because G. wants to frighten some “Gray Hat” users. White Hat and Black Hat marketers know, what they should do now ๐
Thanks for sharing these links.
BR, Chris
Hi Chris. I hear you on both counts ๐ FB is probably a “wait and see” for those, that want to but still did not buy any, and hold if you did buy something. I think it will be pretty volatile still this week, we’ll see. As for Mr G, I agree with you, I guess that’s a form to scare the Gray to Black Hat” users. Thing is, will it really scare them away?
Chris
I don’t think so. But for newbie in SEO, it’s a simple signal “don’t make it in the wrong way :)”

I don’t know too much about the Microsoft social network thing, but I just wonder how well it will do when we already have a bunch of these kinds of sites out there. I haven’t heard duckduckgo mentioned in quite a while now. Good to hear they are still around and doing well.

Yahoo axis, looks good.. but i find it hard to manipulate it compare to google chrome. Too much features i think? DuckDuckGo search engine will take time before it gets known by google visitors.. It’s really hard though to take the visitors of Google.com and users of Facebook.com and this will take much time indeed but thanks for letting us know about these cool stuff ^^
Hi Alicia. I agree, I found it also quite a bit hard to manipulate Axis at first. I guess it is because it is so new and we are so accustomed to “Goggle”… Been playing with it a bit and I think that with some changes it could be interesting. The results are not that bad. DDG is little know indeed and it may take a while before it calls significant attention. We’ll see.

I tried using the Axis and for some reason, it hangs up my Google Chrome browser. If yahoo does not work on this stuff really well, They might not succeed on their goals for Axis. Right, let’s see what happens to DDG after a while. Many Thanks for the response Di Tesco ๐
Now why does that not surprise me at all, Axis not working properly on Chrome, lol.
