With technology and software moving so rapidly and evolving so quickly it can be difficult to stay on top of all the new acronyms, trends and terminology in the sector, such as EAS, or Enterprise Application Software. Therefore in this post, we’ll try to clear things up a little by breaking down what Enterprise Application Software is and then taking a look at how it can help businesses.

What is an enterprise?

Before we jump straight into what enterprise application software actually is we first need to make sure that we understand what the term enterprise stands for. A dictionary definition of enterprise is ‘a company organised for commercial purposes’, and so, in essence, an enterprise is another term for a business or a company. But the key thing to remember here is that what sets an enterprise business apart from any other type of business is its size and the term enterprise is often used to describe very large organisation with multiple activities or functions, such as an international company, government entity, school district or national firm etc.

So what is enterprise application software?

Now that we understand that an enterprise is a very large organisation, it is easier to understand what enterprise application software is, a very large software. Enterprise application software is sometimes referred to as a number of other names such as enterprise software, enterprise app or enterprise application, whatever term is used, it refers to the provision of a critical business solution to help with business operations and internal processes. Let’s break that down a little further.

Enterprise application software activities can usually be divided into two sections:

  1. The storage, display and management of a large amount of data
  2. The automation and support of processes which rely on this business-critical data

This means that enterprise application software can cover a very broad selection of characteristics. To make sure that the purchasing enterprise business receives a solution which meets their own unique set of business requirement, enterprise application software os often custom made and created bespoke in a process known as enterprise applications development.

Some of the most common characteristics that are associated with enterprise application software include:

  • It being easily scalable
  • I being centrally managed
  • I being adaptable to work with other enterprise software which may be in use by the same company or company partners
  • It being business focused
  • It being reliable, robust and trustworthy

Although enterprise application software is most often created bespoke to suit the enterprise business’ needs they often have a series of commonalities, such as:

  • Helping the company with their procurement process
  • Helping the company to organise their scheduling, such as staff rotas etc
  • Handling customer information management
  • Helping the company with order processing
  • Providing help with accounting and payroll

Although these are some of the more common uses of enterprise application software, these roles can vary from business to business depending on what the needs of the business are.

What is the difference between EAS and SaaS?

Enterprise Application Software and Software as a Solution are often confused, however, they have very different purposes.

SaaS tends to take care of one specific purpose, such as Slack for communications and Dropbox for storage etc,  The software tends to be owned by a third party, hosted in the cloud and comes with limited customisation options which can make it difficult for larger enterprise companies to use. SaaS software also relies on the cloud for the querying and reporting of its data which means when many people are trying to access it at once it can become very slow.

EAS, on the other hand, is typically hosted on a physical server which is personal to the enterprise business, this means that it isn’t being shared by other companies and is less likely to become sluggish when multiple users require access. Enterprise application software is also unique to each business and completely customisable which means that it is much more versatile.

So how can enterprise application software help your business?

Because enterprise application software can be so versatile and, essentially, the features of any enterprise application system could vary from business to business it is quite hard to pinpoint the exact benefits that could be seen for each individual business. However, as a whole by implementing enterprise application software you can expect to see an increase in business productivity and significantly enhanced efficiency, not to mention less service downtime and freedom.
